Nice has been inhabited since prehistorical times .
So literally , as soon as you dig somewhere , you find something .
350 years ago , there was a powerful castel here .
Before , there was a cathedral built during the XIth century .
And now , an older church has been found deeper , from paleo-christian times (Vth century ) . .
I'm just wondering if those who built this church so long ago had to suffer from heat as much
as do today those who are looking for their tracks . .

such an important question!
I think it has to instill a sense of wonder to think about all the people who have lived in the area since time immemorial. And to find new evidence continually bust be thrilling.
I suspect the archaeologists of even just 100 years ago would have been scandalized by the garb, or lack thereof, worn by the workers in this photo. Today it rather adds to the picture :)
"Some like it hot" is a title you no doubt recognize :-) , but when something is interesting - what is a heatwave or two?
Yay for archaeology! :D I would love to be able to dig there and search for things centuries old! What fun! Makes my heart pound (in a good way,) just thinking about it. Like playing in the dirt for adults. Great post, Malyss. Thank you!
Working in the heat calls for scant clothing. . . I don't blame them. We have historical digs here but not quite as old -- ju7st a couple hundred years. . .

Fascination...
Nice has probably been a desirable place to live for thousands of years. Why else would there be buildings over the millenia?
The Fifth Century? That is just amazing and what stories could be told there! I do not think that it was as hot then. We have added so much with cars and concrete and engines that make it so much warmer.
I love the photo of the dig.

How fascinating Malyss, I would have loved to be an archeologist, to uncover a find like this would be too fabulous. I think Genie may be right, we really aren't doing very much these days to improve conditions on our wonderful planet.
It must be exciting when something important is found there.
I also wonder how people dealt with the beat back then.
What an amazing history! This is one of the reasons I love Europe. :)
Bises.
